Oh Deer
Deer sausage, its not an everyday thing for most Americans. On that note, it’s not an everyday thing for most people around the world. It is a unique “prize”, or at least my dad thinks so, that he brings home after he has been on a deer-hunting trip. The first time I remember him bringing it home was when I was 7. He had just gone on a long deer-hunting trip in Texas. When he came home, he immediately showed my family his new favorite thing ever, deer sausage. He told us we needed to try it because we would all like it. I have to confess, the first time I saw it and found out what it was, I was skeptical to try it. I’m not even a huge sausage fan in the first place, but deer sausage? I thought my dad was crazy. My dad proved me wrong, because when I tried it, I feel in love with it. Every time my dad brings it home, it comes in a clear package that is long and has the shape and size of a silver dollar. It is a brownish reddish color and doesn’t look like the most appealing thing in the world. It is already cooked when he brings it home so it is kept in the refrigerator and is a food you can just slice and eat whenever. When my dad has it prepared at the place he gets his deer butchered, he asks them to put little chunks of cheddar cheese mixed into the meat. So, along with the deer sausage, I eat cheddar cheese, one of my favorite foods in the world. I have grown up loving deer sausage, especially because it is something that my entire family can enjoy together. It may not be an everyday thing for people, but I think it helps make me a little bit different from all the people around me.
Most people think that deer sausage doesn’t really help you understand someone, but I think it does. It shows some of my background and where I come from that people might not know about me. I come from a Southern city called Memphis, Tennessee. Most people in Memphis love to hunt and do the outdoors thing. I have grown up doing the outdoors thing. My dad is huge outdoorsman, so by hearing that I choose deer sausage, helps you understand that I come from a southern place because it has to do with hunting. Also, you wouldn’t think that the sausage would have any big meaning to a person, but to me it does. Whenever I think of this food, I think of the life I have left behind in Memphis. I remember all those times when my dad would come home from his long hunting trips. I would be so excited and wait all day for him to drive into the driveway. Also, I have memories of my family sitting around the kitchen table eating the sausage and catching up things. We would sit there and just talk because it had probably been a while since we all had time to just sit together. It is a metaphor to my family and me. It helps describe me and the closeness I have to my family, because when I think of this particular food I think of my family. This shows I am a person that values family and time that is spent together. It says that I love to be with the people who mean the most to me. I am a very social person, but I do also like to be with my family as much as I can, and deer sausage really helped do this and think of them while I am away.
I know that deer sausage may not mean the same thing it does to me to everyone else who eats it, but it probably has some meaning to them personally. It is a good easy food to eat when you are hungry and want something fast. You can eat it on crackers with hot sauce or cheese. You can also eat it in a biscuit too. There are many ways to eat it, but it’s different for any person that eats it. It is however not a common food for all people, but down South where I am from, it seems to be more common. It is safe to say that someone who eats the sausage a lot is probably from a Southern state as apposed to a Northern, Western, and Eastern state. By talking about this food, it helps people not from the area see more into the Southern culture. It helps show about the people down here and what they like to do with their time. People in the South hunt a lot and love to eat what they kill, so this food just highlights that I am from the South and shows more about my culture.

I thought this was a creative paper with good ideas. I like how you incoroprated your culture into it. The organizaton and transitions could be better. You jump around a lot and some thoughts are all clumped togather. You start with how your dad brought it home, to what it looked like, how you love cheese, to family, to southern, to an easy food to eat. You could make it flow better by a prargraph when your dad brought it home and first trying it, then a paragraph on how you like your deer meet etc., and then maby how it ties in with your family culture. This will help the focous of your paper as well. You did a good job with the mechanincs of the paper. The content of the paper was good too.
first of all, i'm from the south too, and i've had deer jerky before, but never deer sausage. reading this makes me want to try it. I liked how you included your southern culture into it. Some of your sentences are a little choppy and don't flow that well. also, the organization of your paragraphs jump around a little. overall, its a good paper, and you did a good job providing details and explaining why you like deer sausage.

I enjoyed reading your paper. I have never had deer sausage but, it is something I would like to try. I agree with you about being skeptical about eating it. I would feel the same way I think. I liked the fact that you included some background on your family and how deer sausage was brought into your home by your dad. Also, I liked the southern culture part. It showed the background of where you came from and the types of things people in the south like to do. Food is always a way to get families together to catch up on missed time.
One thing I think you could improve is the organization of your paper. You include a lot of good ideas but, you tend to jump from one idea to another in your paragraphs. I think it would flow better if you devoted a different paragraph to each topic or idea. Also, I think you could be more descriptive when you talk about the deer sausage itself. People who have never seen or eaten deer sauage might want to better feel of it. I think by describing the taste, texture, smell, and look would give the reader a better feel for the actual meat.

I thought this was a very interesting and creative paper. I have never experienced deer meat, actually never really thought of eating it. Now, I’m kind of curious. You start out strong in your first paragraph about deer hunting and how your dad loves to hunt and loves bringing home deer meat. I like the fact that this is how you begin to introduce your food, but I think you could expand more on this by including a little story about your dad bringing it home for the first time. You have lots of good information and facts throughout this paper but try not to be too wordy or repetitive in some areas. For example, you mention that you love family a lot in the second paragraph.
The organization of your paper is almost there, it could use a little help though. A clearer thesis in your intro paragraph would help guide us, the reader, to what you will be talking about throughout your paper. You tend to jump from one thought to a completely different thought, try topic and concluding sentences for each paragraph to offer a better flow and make it less choppy. I would actually split up what you have as your first paragraph right now and devote a whole paragraph to the actual dish. You need more details about deer meat, what did it taste like? What exactly does it look like (more than just color)? What does it smell like? Also, when I was reading this, I really wanted to know more about your first experience with this food since you start to mention it.
