Essay 2- What is Art?

What is Art? According to Webster’s Dictionary Art is a decorative or illustrative element in printed matter but to others are is something completely different. Art has a deeper meaning beyond the printed matter; it is an expression of emotions and feeling. If you feel the way I feel about Art, I strongly suggest going to view two pieces at the Synaesthetic Arts Cotillion. Many people do not know what SynArts is but it is a non-profit organization containing pieces that mix the senses. This means the visual art can be “heard” and auditory art can be “touched.” Without even seeing the exhibit the definition caught my attention. Once inside there are many exquisite pieces but the two pieces that caught my eye right away were, Strangers by James Williams and Rachel Higgins’ Going Away Party by Jonathan Purvis. At first glance, these two works seem ordinary but if you take a deeper look they are each full of emotion and meaning that has to do with everyday life.

When I first saw Strangers, it was portrayed on linoleum and cardboard that had been ripped at the sides. It did not seem like Williams was concerned with perfection but more with portraying and highlight the different shapes and sizes he put together to create the background. At first I thought it was dark and it made me feel upset for an unknown reason but when I took a deeper look at it, it made me think of diversity. In my mind James Williams was trying to portray the world and the diversity that existed. The quote he stenciled on with white frost jumped out at me as if it were a jack in the box wound too tight, it stated, “Strangers on this road we are on but we are not two, we are one.” This enforces my thoughts on diversity because I feel like he is trying to say, we are all on the same blueprint of life when it comes to what we are made up of and what we want, but at the same time we are still our own because of our diverse personalities and backgrounds. I feel like many artists lately relate works of art back to diversity, such as Williams, because there are so many ways to express it. The other piece of work the shined so brightly to me, it was full of so many different emotions for one reason.

Rachel Higgins’ Going Away party was not painted are but was actual pictures created on silver gelatin prints and set up in squares that gave me a sense of a picture booth. I think that Jonathan Purvis set this up so perfectly. It made me feel as if a party really was going on. I also really felt like I was a part of the emotions. It seems to me this is expressing the bittersweet more emotional view of diversity. There are these blocks with one to two people in each, some are happy, some hugging, and some sad. Everything you would expect from a going away party. The block that caught my eye more than anything I have ever seen in a piece of artwork was the second row from the top, third over. It is a picture of this man, probably in his twenties or lower thirties and he is wearing a mask. This brought many questions to mind. It was not a costume party so I could not figure out why he would have a mask at first. Besides who really brings masks around to parties? Then all at once it hit me like a freight train. This is a going away party for a girl named Rachel. I know we are talking about art but this made me think of movies. There is always that one boy who is in love with the main girl but never tells her how he feels so he ends up loosing her someway or another. I feel like this man is wearing this mask because he is hiding something most likely from Rachel Higgins. Every other block the friends are holding beer, hugging, and laughing. This man though, he is standing still with no expression on his face while wearing this black mask. Maybe I am looking way too deep into this but it really interested me and made me think. Why do we hold in emotions until it is too late? I feel like this piece really made me understand the definition of SynArts. It made me feel these intense emotions about how this man hiding behind his mask felt like a reject loosing someone he loves when she has no idea because he is hiding. It made me feel how the possibly best friend in the very left bottom corner felt hugging her best friend before she leaves to take on other tasks in life. The piece doesn’t show us why Rachel is going away but it does make us feel was saying goodbye to a friend feels like. As I said earlier, the most important thing when it comes to Art is how it makes you feel and why it makes you feel that way. No matter what your definition of Art is or what it looks like as long as it moves you and makes you feel something then it is a great piece of
Art.
