My Life (Melissa Lovell)

I am a freshman at the University of Alabama. I am not the skinniest person in the world but I am also not the fattest. I now have reddish-brown hair and I used to have dirty blonde hair. I am what I could consider short, 5’3”. I have an older sister. I was really shy in high school and had a hard time making friends. I have become a little more out-going since I got to college, but I still think that I am pretty shy. I do not like the way that I look and I am always comparing myself to others. I am not very funny. My friends think that I tell the worst stories ever. Now whenever one of us tells a bad story, they say that they have told a Melissa story. I love football and I am that girl that will be yelling right along with the boys. I am one of the few students at the University of Alabama that does not drink. I am a Christian. I try my best not to make fun of other people and I try my best not to gossip. I am a member of the sorority Delta Zeta. I have always had a problem with talking too much. I hate to exercise. I am not very good at school, I mean I try my hardest but there are just some things that I am just not good at. I want to be an accountant and eventually one day I would love to be the CFO of a major corporation and in turn be one of the richest women in the world.

Who I Am

Sarah, a beautiful bundle of joy brought into this world, she grew up to become her own unique being. As a toddler, she was a mischievous child who took curiosity in everything.

Growing up her life was far different than the average American child. Sarah’s father was in the military and, they moved around often. By being a military brat Sarah learned the true meaning of family and friendship; never taking for granted those moments she had to spend with her family.

Being the oldest child she learned responsibility and leadership at a very tender age. As Sarah continued to grow and learn, she developed a very friendly and open personality: constantly speaking to strangers and never shutting up when talking with friends. Sarah lived up to the meaning of name: “princess”, she lived her life like royalty. She never allowed her blessed lifestyle to interfere with her opinion of others. Sarah kept it “real” at all times. Her words were sometimes hurtful, but she only spoke the truth of her opinion and was always “frank”. However, her frankness often got her into trouble.

Today Sarah is still living her dreams and enjoying life. She has set goals for herself and achieved them at all costs. Sarah never allowed anyone to tell her she couldn’t do something. She is a strong-willed, smart, determined, and loving young lady, who has opened many doors for herself by becoming a high graduate in just three years. She will continue to open many more.

All About Laurel

My name is Laurel Jana Caldwell. I was born on January 6, 1989. I am 18 years old and went to Bob Jones High School in Madison, Alabama. I have lived in Madison my entire life. There isn't much to do around there, but my friends and I always figure out something to do. Dancing is my passion, and I have been dancing ever since I was three. Jazz, ballet, and modern are my favorite, but I also love tap. Every January, we go to Atlanta for competition, which is so much fun. We spend a whole weekend competing and taking classes from professional dancers.

My family means so much to me. They have supported me in everything I have done. Even when I mess up, I know they will still love me just the same. I have two little sisters, who I don't always get along with, but i love them anyways.I love hanging out with my friends and just having fun. I don't know what I would do without them because I know I can always count on them. I also love being outdoors and doing things like hiking, fishing, playing games outside, and going to the lake and going skiing and tubing.

Ashley Lauren Darnell Takes on Tuscaloosa

My name is Ashley Lauren Darnell and some people may mistake me as a drama queen but I have got news for you. It’s not me, it’s them.
I have always lived an easy going, drama free life. That is until I relocated from Marietta, Georgia to Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Let me tell you, this may sound like the next story line for Laguna Beach, but it’s not. The people, the locations, and the drama are actually real. My story begins exactly one month ago when I met my two best friends and pledge sisters on Bid Day. Meeting them was the beginning of my social life; little did I know it would also be the beginning of the most drama I’ve seen in eighteen years. The best part about my “triplets” is how different we are while also being so alike. Amanda is just like me only a better version. She is forgiving, understanding, and puts thought into all of her decisions, while I have a tendency to be stubborn and impulsive. By the way those happen to be two very dangerous things when mixed together, kind of like fire and gasoline. Katie on the other hand is the instigator to my forest fire of drama. She is a sophomore, the more responsible triplet but that has its downfalls. She also has a boyfriend named Andrew who happens to think that we are bad influences on Katie and her desires to go out with her girls. This leads me to the main exhibit of my drama filled life. Andrew has two roommates, so he came up with the brilliant plan that maybe he could set us all up. So then all of the best friends would be together, that way we wouldn’t want to go out and Katie would always be with him. Wrong! This caused major problems for two reasons. One, Amanda and I had no idea when we were going over to his house that we were being set up. Two, picture the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk and you’ve got the exact image of Dan. His other roommate looked like a gorgeous firefighter off of one of those calendars you find at a stand in the mall. Of course I would be the one to be set up, without me even knowing, with the jolly green giant. This did not go over well with me. I like to think of myself as a classy southern lady. I don’t want to be called an easy dz, yes I hear that about three times a day it’s not funny anymore, by someone who actually means it. Well this giant thinks that he is going to try and kiss me. For one, I don’t kiss on the first date, especially when it’s not even a date. Two, I try to hold myself back from kissing giants, not my thing. So when I turn my head he takes it to the extreme. About ten minutes later his phone rings and all of a sudden his friend has been in a terrible wreck and is dying. The next day I find out he can’t take rejection and went to a friends house. To this day whenever I see him I make sure to ask him how his dying friend is doing. I even took him flowers to give to his friend. One night spent at that house and I could never show my face there again. That’s what Andrew gets though, now we get our triplet and our fun. My advice to everyone don’t follow in Ashley Darnell’s footsteps. Wherever I go, drama will be right behind me.

About Myself - Jared Sims

It wasn’t hard to find me while I was growing up. A majority of the time you could go ahead and assume that I was outside. There wasn’t much that kept me inside growing up aside from school and church. Church was a big part of my life growing up until my teen years where I seemed to always find a way to get out of going. Hunting and Fishing are priorities that occupy a good portion of my time. I owe everything I know about the aforementioned activities to my grandfather that passed away, which in my eyes is still a better fisherman than Bill Dance. My family owns three lake houses in Florida where you can find me most of the summer. Growing up it seemed like I always managed to find a way to stay in trouble. I was the kind of person that never liked being told what to do and could reason my way out of anything. If you ever have seen Dennis the Menace, you could compare my childhood years with his. I played baseball and football all throughout school which ended up leaving me with memories I will never forget. My role model growing up was my middle school football coach who taught me more about life than a lot of people knew. Typically, I was the guy in the group that was always open minded and ready to try something new. Trying something new wasn’t always the best idea because generally it leaded to me getting in trouble.

Adam Weinstein: Two Truths and a Lie (guess which is which)

1. If asked what he might like to be, Adam Weinstein might tell you: a famous cheese smuggler. Camembert, cantal, chaource; epoisses, fourme d'ambert, pont leveque—the names of these famous cheeses are as sweet on the tongue as the actual cheeses to which they’re attached. “It’s a shame,” he might say, “that we have waged this war against the unpasteurized.” For him, the lure of the raw-milk cheese—the earthy flavor cultivated through fermentation and mold—is nearly too much; and if, on a fine spring morning in some out-of-the-way village in the Alps, he is too tempted—he could later be found with a ripe, melting reblochon in his pocket on his way back to the US.

2. If pressed, Adam Weinstein might reveal his simple love of the circus. “The clowns, dancing bears, the cage full of lions—there is nothing I like better, than to spend the afternoon with a bag full of popcorn, and a straw dipped in spun sugar, throwing peanuts to the elephants as they go one-by-one into the big-top, or studying over Peru's ica stonesin the cave of wonders.”

3. But never, not in a million years, will Adam Weinstein tell you about his plans to travel to Hungary and Romania this summer, the countries of his forebears. “To find out about your family?” you might ask. “Alas, no,” he will tell you. “I’m going for the vampires and somnambulists.” You see, Adam Weinstein is secretly obsessed with the Somnambulist, a character from a famous German silent film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. In fact, Adam Weinstein will soon be writing a novel about the Somnambulist when he was just a boy—that takes place before he was sold to the circus, and forced to forecast the future.

Welcome!

Welcome to English 101. The purpose of this blog is to allow you to post your essays, which can, and will be read by the world at large. Don't be daunted by the idea that others will be able to read your writing. Writing is simply a form of communication--and we talk to each other all the time, every day. Formal composition has its own set of communication rules just like emailing, txting, letter-writing, etc. If you don't feel quite comfortable with the idea or rules of formal composition just yet, that's okay--hopefully it's a skill we will all hone and improve upon as the semester rolls on. Having access to a wider audience will allow your papers the proper space to live--rather than die in the bottom of a desk drawer, or be burned out in the backyard :) they can enter into discourse, which, after all, is the whole point. So...good luck!

Some rules: This blog is for you to post your papers and comment on other's work. This requires that you respect the space. Any content that is deemed inappropriate in any way (hateful, racist, sexist, harassing, etc) will be removed and I will submit your name and work to the proper authorities. This is not to say that I'm a censor--I just want to be clear that I do not tolerate any kind of hatefully motivated speech, nor do I tolerate willful ignorance.
